Wigan wildlife

Where’s it gone. Not seen
a fox, rabbit or deer for ages, nearest I’ve got
is a mouse giving the dog the runaround in back garden.

I know where there is a fox run on Wigan Lane, foxes, badgers and no doubt other critters come up Sicklefield from the Douglas Valley, they then cross the road and head down Old Lane, which takes them on to the Whitley Estate, I presume they are mooching in folks gardens looking for food

The only wildlife I’ve ever seen in Wigan is pigeons, sheppies and rats.
If I ever saw a deer in Wigan I’d show my arse off the motorway bridge!

Tonker there are deer/foxes around Stubshaw Cross. It was only last week there was a deer injured crossing Golborne Rd.
This morning at about 6-00am I was surprised by the lack of birds singing and general activity. The air is normally full of bird songs and birds flying backwards and forwards to their nesting areas.Been outside a few times since then only a pecky Pidgeon on top of the bird table not much bird song. They must be having a lie in while its the week end

On about the lack of birds, there are the flashes, with Horrocks Flash being a designated wetland area, along with the Three Sisters wetland which was created a few years ago, and we have had a lot of rain, so with the weather turning warmer, and the wetlands being really wet and warm, I would imagine the flashes and Three Sisters will be alive with insects, so I would hazard a guess that that is where most of the birds are now feeding, they follow the food sources

Tom, I did say "If I ever saw a deer in Wigan".

Firstly, 'I' didn't see it, 'you' did.
Secondly, your film isn't taken in Wigan.

" welcome to the Wigan Flashes" and it was made and paid for the Wigan Council. Laaaaaike...

Peter, I know exactly where Wigan is, I’ve spent enough time there!
Regardless of what the council call them, Wigan Flashes are in Ince!

There's plenty wild life in King Street on a Friday and Saturday nights.

For those interested in seeing birds, go to Martin Mere one afternoon. It's a lovely place to go and when we went years ago, I took loads of photos of all different kinds of birds I'd never seen before.

When me and my mate go over to Spain for a week, to do a bit of work, we occasionally nip down to the coast to look at all different kinds of birds we've never seen before. It's something we never do when our wives are with us. They don't know what they're missing!

Mollie, This is true, You will see many types of birds over in the Wigan flashes, Bird watchers come from all over England to the Wigan flashes and, its a true natural environment, They are not caged up , horrockses Flash and Pearsons Flash are the main ones but, Its the birds choice where to fly or land, Martin Mere will charge you to enter and you have to buy their bird food if you want to feed them,
There is also A bird watching station on the 3 sisters site at Bryn,

Tom, do you seriously believe that any birds will fly over hundreds of miles of perfect natural habitat and ignore it, just to be in Ince? in the Wigan metropolitan borough?
Like, they'll all say to each other, after a winter in a nicer climate, "hey, come on lads, raaaaight, we'd best fly back to t'borough for a bit, so's them birdwatchers will come from all over t'country to spot us theer in t'borough, laaaaike"?!

Well, of course they do, Tonker. Where else would they want to be?

Tom, I honestly can't remember if we had to pay to get into Martin Mere, or not. This was back in 2008, but it's still worth the visit.

Tonks, tha knows how I laaaike a baaaike ride yea, Well one day I'm round wigan Flashes and i see many, many blokes with £1000's of cameras, dressed in camo clothing so, I stopped and asked what , why and how many, So this chap explained, they are a gaggle of twitters who come to Wigan Flashes every six months to update their records of, the bird species and numbers, they even can name some individuals who are regulars and these guys come from everywhere and rate Wigan Flashes as one of the top venues for seeing the changes of nature, So yea, these birds are coming to Wigan ( sorry Ince) for reasons that no one knows yet,

Mollie, I paid to go in Martin mere and protested but the money collector argued that, We are helping the birds by creating awareness from youngsters but, what she meant was, we are making money from the gullible,
